I was born and raised in the heart of the Central Valley, Modesto , California . After 18 years of running barefoot through pastures, throwing dirt clods at crop dusters, and hanging out in peach orchards and on canal banks, I joined the Air Force and lived in such exotic places as Texas and Japan.
While awaiting the birth of my first daughter, I decided to write and illustrate a story my mother had told me as a child. It was the first time I realized I could draw. As I began my career as a mother I decided to enroll in a Bachelor of Arts program in Advertising and Graphic Design at the La Jolla Academy of Advertising Art. I created t-shirt designs for several beach clothing companies, worked in production departments for advertising agencies and magazines, and freelanced as a graphic designer.
I gave up life in the fast lane of advertising to move back to my hometown, raise my children, and work in a profession that doesn't bleed her creativity dry.
But, being a 911 dispatcher does take a lot out of me. The long hours, overtime, a 2 hour commute, and the type of work that it entails can be extremely emotionally draining.
ART saves my soul.
My favorite artistic expression is playing in my Soul Journal. A Soul Journal, is a colorful, expressive, spontaneous, evolving space where I express my dreams, ideas, and desires. Soul Journal Pages include finger painting, collage, image transfers, journal writing, lettering and doodling. Anything goes! The freedom of allowing the Creative to spill and play upon the paper is meditative and transformative.
I also create mixed media collages and art pieces that bring together recycled/reclaimed magazine paper, newspaper, boxes, and found and vintage ephemera. Not just because it seems responsible to reuse rather than throw away, but also because there is a lingering energy attached to everyday items from all the people who have used them previously. These pieces have a voice, a story, that adds to the creative process.
The process of Soul Journaling is an exploration. Spitit does not move in a straight, rational line. I open up to the Creative and play with my toys until until my soul says "Done!". And then I sit back, look at the creation, and allow it to tell my rational brain something that I didn't know or didn't have permission to tell myself.
